Arcade: Game Development for Engineering Students – My Research Summary

Arcade is a game design and development methodology created for students who know how to program but might not have strong artistic skills. It was introduced as part of an elective course in a systems engineering program at a higher education institution and was used over four academic semesters. During that time, 87 students took part and created a total of 48 video games.

Arcade is designed to help small teams —just two programmers, no artists required— build a functional and engaging first version of a video game, or at least a working piece of software with the core features in place. It’s a practical approach that works well under tight budgets and limited resources, making game development more accessible to those just starting out.

Right now, it’s part of the final projects students complete in the Systems Engineering program.
